Barry Keoghan has addressed the possibility of reprising his role as the Joker in The Batman – Part II, stating that he is still unsure about whether he will return.
Keoghan portrayed the Joker in a brief scene in Matt Reeves’ 2022 superhero film, where the villain shared a moment with the Riddler, played by Paul Dano.
As production for the sequel gets underway, many fans are eager to see if Keoghan will reprise the role. However, the actor explained that he has not been contacted about returning, despite his interest in exploring the character further. “If the opportunity came up, I’d love to dive into it,” Keoghan said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “But I haven’t heard anything yet.”
While Keoghan remains tight-lipped, director Matt Reeves, who is also a producer on The Penguin, spoke to Digital Spy about Keoghan’s portrayal of the iconic character, describing him as a “special” actor.
“Barry is a wonderful actor,” Reeves said. “We talked a lot about how the Joker’s worldview is shaped by being disfigured from birth. It’s like life played a cruel joke on him, which affects how he laughs and sees the world.”
Reeves explained that the Joker’s philosophy, including his unsettling laugh, comes from the life of pain and hardship he has endured. “It’s about finding a different way into the character while dealing with the themes that are central to the Joker,” Reeves added.
