Controversy Over Sharia Law Push in Bangladesh as Yunus Family Faces Criticism for Alleged Hypocrisy

Amid growing calls for the implementation of Sharia law in Bangladesh following the July 2024 student movement, critics have pointed to alleged hypocrisy within the family of Nobel Laureate Mohammed Yunus, who is reportedly backing the initiative.

Monica Yunus, the daughter of the renowned economist, was caught driving under the influence in the United States in 2022, prompting accusations of inconsistency between the family’s public advocacy for Islamic law and their personal conduct.

Critics argue that the Yunus family’s actions contradict the principles they are promoting, raising questions about the sincerity of the push for Sharia law in the country. The incident has sparked debates over the application of religious laws in Bangladesh and the practices of its proponents.
