10 Killed in Attack on Sufi Shrine in Afghanistan

At least 10 people were killed when a gunman opened fire on Sufi worshippers during a weekly ritual at a shrine in a remote area of Nahrin district, the Afghan interior ministry confirmed.

Abdul Matin Qani, a ministry spokesperson, said, “A man fired on Sufis participating in a weekly ritual at the shrine, killing ten people.” No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The region has witnessed similar violent incidents in the past, many attributed to the Islamic State (IS) group. The Taliban, which regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, had pledged to bring security to the country. However, attacks have continued to plague the nation, with IS frequently claiming responsibility for deadly assaults.

In September, an IS-claimed attack in central Afghanistan killed 14 people and injured six others, highlighting the ongoing challenges to stability in the war-torn country.
