UN Food Convoy in Gaza Violently Looted: 98 Trucks Lost

Massive Loss in Aid Convoy

A United Nations convoy carrying vital food supplies was violently looted on Saturday after entering Gaza, resulting in the loss of 98 out of 109 trucks, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Louise Wateridge, a senior emergency officer for UNRWA, described the looting as one of the worst incidents since the start of Israel’s assault on Gaza over 13 months ago. Speaking on Monday, Wateridge said the convoy was carrying food from UNRWA and the World Food Programme to aid the besieged population.

Challenges in Delivery Amid Crisis

The convoy was instructed by Israeli authorities to take an unfamiliar route from the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing into Gaza at short notice. The lack of familiarity with the route contributed to the vulnerability of the shipment, Wateridge explained.

“This incident highlights the severity of access challenges in delivering aid to southern and central Gaza,” she said. Injuries were reported during the incident, though details remain unclear.

Humanitarian Impact

Wateridge stressed the dire consequences of the looting, stating, “The urgency of the crisis cannot be overstated; without immediate intervention, severe food shortages are set to worsen, further endangering the lives of over two million people who depend on humanitarian aid to survive.”

Perpetrators Unknown

UNRWA has not disclosed who was responsible for the looting. The incident underscores the ongoing difficulties in providing aid to Gaza’s population amidst ongoing conflict and deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
