Canon and Imagica Group Unveil VR Footage Simulating Space Travel, Captured from the Stratosphere

Canon Inc., in collaboration with Imagica Group Inc., a prominent video production company, has released stunning VR footage captured from the stratosphere using advanced camera technology.

The footage was created using three high-performance cameras mounted on a balloon that ascended to an altitude of approximately 25,000 meters. Designed to simulate the experience of space travel, the immersive visuals offer a breathtaking view of Earth’s surface and the vast sky in 3D.

The VR footage was showcased at an industry exhibition in Chiba, where attendees experienced it through VR goggles. The content was part of an effort to highlight advancements in video technology and its potential applications.

To capture the footage, the two companies conducted an experiment in February, launching the cameras and balloon over Mongolia’s snowy plains. At an altitude where temperatures plummet to minus 50°C, the equipment successfully recorded the extraordinary visuals.

Canon and Imagica Group see immense potential in live-action VR content across various fields, including education, tourism, and entertainment. They anticipate growing demand for immersive VR experiences as goggle-type headsets become more widely adopted.

“With the increasing popularity of VR headsets, we aim to explore their diverse applications,” said a representative from Imagica Group.
