Bread and Roses: Heartbreaking Stories of Afghan Wome

Lawrence Appears with Baby Bump at Premiere

Jennifer Lawrence made a striking appearance at the premiere of the documentary Bread and Roses last Thursday night at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, showcasing her baby bump. The Oscar-winning actress, who is expecting her second child, wore a black off-shoulder gown and was surrounded by photographers on the red carpet.

Bread and Roses focuses on the plight of women in Afghanistan following the return of the Taliban to power. Directed by Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani, the documentary was co-produced by Lawrence, Justin Kierarski, and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai. Ahead of its release on Apple TV+ on November 22, the documentary will be shown in a few theaters. After premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, it was widely praised for its powerful storytelling.

In a previous interview, Lawrence shared her motivation for producing the documentary: “I couldn’t accept what was happening to the women of Afghanistan under the Taliban. I would read the news and feel completely hopeless. I wanted to do something, and Bread and Roses gave me that chance.”

Sahra Mani had previously made a documentary about sexual harassment victims titled A Thousand Girls Like Me, which drew Lawrence and Kierarski’s attention. Sahra had left Afghanistan just one month before the Taliban took control and did not know that she would never be able to return. Bread and Roses tells the stories of three Afghan women, with much of the footage filmed by the women themselves.

Lawrence, who began producing films in 2022 with Causeway, has expressed a desire to continue producing documentaries along with her acting career. Her upcoming film, Die, My Love, a dark comedy-horror, is set to release soon, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Lynne Ramsay. Martin Scorsese is also one of the producers of the film.
