Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s Pick for DNI, Has a History of Condemning Pakistan’s Role in Minority Atrocities

Washington, D.C. – President-elect Donald Trump has named former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as his Director of National Intelligence (DNI), marking a significant addition to his administration. Gabbard, the first Hindu member of Congress, is known for her outspoken criticism of Pakistan’s military and its treatment of minorities, as well as her strong advocacy for religious freedom and human rights.

A Unique Background in U.S. Politics

Gabbard’s appointment brings her trailblazing journey full circle. Raised in a Hindu household by a mother who converted to the faith, Gabbard has embraced her religious identity throughout her life. Sworn into Congress on the Bhagavad Gita, Gabbard has often championed causes tied to religious minorities and human rights globally.

Highlighting Atrocities in South Asia

In 2021, Gabbard introduced a resolution in Congress spotlighting atrocities against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. The resolution detailed the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, during which the Pakistani military carried out mass killings and targeted Bengali Hindus, resulting in the deaths of 2-3 million people. Gabbard described these events as a campaign of genocide and urged international accountability.

Her criticism extended to Pakistan’s ongoing role in fostering terrorism. As co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus in 2017, Gabbard worked to cut U.S. military aid to Pakistan, citing its support for militant groups operating in India and Afghanistan.

Pushing for Legislative Change

Gabbard has a track record of taking bold legislative stances. She introduced the Stop Arming Terrorists Act, a bill aimed at ending U.S. support for nations and organizations backing terrorism, including Pakistan. The legislation underscored her commitment to holding countries accountable for their ties to extremist groups.

Championing Minority Rights in the U.S.

Domestically, Gabbard has also been a voice against rising hate crimes targeting religious and ethnic minorities. She expressed deep concern about violence against Hindus, Sikhs, and other communities in the United States, calling for increased awareness and action from the Department of Justice.

A Strategic Appointment by Trump

Trump’s decision to appoint Gabbard comes as his administration signals a hardline stance on human rights abuses and terrorism globally. The campaign has also highlighted violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh following political unrest in the region.

As Gabbard steps into her new role, her history of addressing global human rights issues and her focus on accountability are expected to shape U.S. intelligence policies in the years ahead.
