Russia Launches Massive Assault on Ukraine’s Energy and Military Infrastructure

Russia unleashed one of its largest coordinated attacks on Ukraine since the start of the nearly three-year war, targeting critical energy and military facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that approximately 120 missiles and 90 drones were deployed in Sunday’s assault, with Ukrainian defenses intercepting over 140 projectiles.

Explosions reverberated across the country, including in Kyiv, Odesa, and other major regions. A Russian drone strike in Mykolaiv killed two people and injured six, including children, leaving the area without power. Ukraine’s energy operator, DTEK, instituted emergency power cuts in the Kyiv region and other areas as the attacks intensified.

Energy Minister German Galushchenko confirmed widespread strikes on power generation and transmission facilities, prompting rolling blackouts nationwide. Russia’s targeting of energy infrastructure has repeatedly plunged Ukraine into power shortages since the war began in February 2022.

Russian Forces Gain Momentum
Sunday’s strikes coincided with a significant escalation in Russian ground operations, marking the fastest rate of territorial advances since the war’s early stages. Adding to Ukraine’s challenges, North Korea has reportedly dispatched thousands of troops to Russia’s Kursk region to support Moscow’s military efforts.

Zelenskyy expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution by 2025, even as Russian President Vladimir Putin renewed calls for peace negotiations to address what he claims are the “root causes” of the conflict, including NATO’s expansion.

Uncertainty Over U.S. Support for Ukraine
The future of American aid to Ukraine remains unclear following the election of President-elect Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly questioned the substantial U.S. military assistance provided to Ukraine, and Vice President-elect JD Vance has suggested that the new administration might adopt a more conciliatory stance toward Russia, potentially allowing it to retain seized Ukrainian territory.

In contrast, the outgoing Biden administration has pledged unwavering support for Ukraine, with G7 leaders reaffirming their commitment to assist Kyiv “for as long as it takes.”

The attacks and shifting international dynamics underscore the high stakes for Ukraine as it seeks to defend its sovereignty while navigating a complex geopolitical landscape.
