Karoline Leavitt Named Youngest White House Press Secretary

President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Karoline Leavitt as White House press secretary, making her the youngest in U.S. history to hold the position at just 27 years old. Trump praised Leavitt as a “highly effective communicator” and expressed confidence in her ability to help advance his administration’s agenda.

“Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator,” Trump said in a statement reported by the Associated Press. “I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium and help deliver our message to the American people as we Make America Great Again.”

A Familiar Face in Trump’s Team

Leavitt’s appointment marks a return to the Trump administration. She previously served as an assistant press secretary during Trump’s first term (2017–2021), gaining experience as a spokesperson and media strategist. After Trump’s 2020 election loss, Leavitt became communications director for Republican Representative Elise Stefanik, who has since been nominated to serve as Trump’s U.N. ambassador.

Political Experience

In 2022, Leavitt ran for Congress in New Hampshire, securing the Republican primary but losing the general election to Democrat Chris Pappas. Her campaign bolstered her skills in public speaking and political communication, solidifying her reputation as a rising star in conservative circles.

Leavitt later returned to Trump’s team, leading communications for his 2024 campaign and transition efforts. Reflecting on her new role, she called it “an incredible honor” to once again serve the administration.

Historical Context

Leavitt’s age breaks the record previously held by Ron Ziegler, who became White House press secretary at 29 during President Richard Nixon’s administration in 1969. Her appointment signals a generational shift and highlights the growing prominence of young leaders in political communications.

Transitioning from Biden to Trump

As Leavitt prepares to step into the role, the Biden administration wraps up its tenure, during which Jen Psaki and Karine Jean-Pierre served as press secretaries.

Leavitt’s blend of prior White House experience, campaign communications leadership, and youthful energy is expected to shape her tenure in the high-profile role as Trump’s administration returns to the White House.
