Paramedics and police have rushed to the scene of a fatal vehicle crash near a preschool in Riddells Creek, a regional town in Victoria. The incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon, has left one adult dead and a child hospitalized with serious injuries.
The crash took place around 2:30 p.m. near the Macedon Ranges Montessori Preschool on Main Road. Victoria Police reported that, at this early stage, it is believed a truck collided with a vehicle in the area.
“One adult, who has not yet been formally identified, died at the scene,” Victoria Police said in a statement. “A child was injured and has been taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver was also transported to the hospital for observation. Investigations are ongoing into the exact circumstances of the crash.”
A local worker from a nearby business, who did not wish to be named, reported seeing parents outside the school, but no children. She believed a white sedan had hit a power pole near the school, though the details of the crash are still unclear.
Emergency services, including an ambulance and multiple police vehicles, were on the scene, while a Channel 9 helicopter was spotted circling the area around 3 p.m.
This tragic incident comes less than two weeks after another fatal crash occurred at a school in Melbourne. On October 29, an 11-year-old boy, Jack Davey, was killed when a car crashed into the playground of Auburn South Primary School in Hawthorn East. Several other children were also seriously injured in that accident.
The investigation into the Riddells Creek crash continues, with authorities working to determine the full details of what led to the collision.
