“Famine Likely Happening in North Gaza,” Says UNRWA Chief
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini has sounded the alarm on a potential famine in northern Gaza, describing the crisis as “man-made” and accusing Israel of “weaponising hunger” in its conflict with the Palestinian enclave. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lazzarini stated, “Famine is likely happening in northern Gaza. This deprives people in Gaza of the basics including food to survive.”
Severe Aid Shortage in Gaza
Lazzarini highlighted the stark shortfall in aid, noting that the average daily aid intake is around 30 trucks, representing just six percent of Gaza’s daily needs. Despite international calls for increased humanitarian access, entry of essential supplies has nearly stopped, exacerbating the crisis for civilians trapped in the region.
UN-Backed Famine Review Committee Issues Warning
The UN-backed Famine Review Committee recently issued a report warning of “an imminent and substantial likelihood of famine occurring” in northern Gaza due to intensified hostilities and the severe reduction of food aid. This situation has intensified calls from the international community for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to the region.
The worsening crisis underscores the urgent need for action to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
