Bangladesh student leader Hasnat-Sarjis withdrew the injunction banning 11 parties

Anti-discrimination student movement convener Hasnat Abdullah and central coordinator Sarjid Alam withdrew the writ banning 11 political parties, including Awami League and Jatiya Party, and declaring the last three parliamentary elections unconstitutional.

The petitioners’ lawyers petitioned Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Mahmudur Razi High Court bench, which issued the order on October 29.

Legal counsel Ahsanul Karim informed reporters that the petitioners no longer desire to continue the writ action. Due to this, the High Court has dismissed the writ petition.

Ahsanul Karim, Sarjis’ lawyer, said only applicants can explain why the application was dropped. However, some political party names were included while others were left out by mistake.

Given the country’s political climate, the writ banning 11 parties’ political activity has been revoked, he added.

The writ was filed on October 28 by Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, and Hasibul Islam.

Political parties petitioning for the ban are- Bangladesh Awami League, Jatiya Party, Jatiya Sajtantrik Dal – JASOD (Inu), Jatiya Party (JP), Tarikat Federation, Democratic Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Liberal Democratic PartyLDP, Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal (M-L) (Dilip Barua), Bangladesh National Socialist Party(BASOD).

The writ petition requested regulations explaining why the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth parliamentary elections should not be illegitimate. Also requested was the revocation of three electoral gazette notifications.
However, the writ attempted to bar these 11 parties from future elections and revoke their powers as parliamentarians from the three elections. Why MPs would not be issued sedition charges was also asked.
