NARAYANGANJ- Garment workers from several factories blocked a key road in Narayanganj on Monday, demanding an increase in the minimum monthly wage to Tk 30,000, disrupting traffic and causing significant inconvenience to commuters.
The workers gathered in the Kathpul area of Kutubail in Narayanganj Sadar Upazila at around 11:30am before taking to the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road at around noon.
Employees of several garment factories in Fatullah, including Metro Knitting, Palmal Garments, Abir Fashion and Azad-Rifat Dyeing, took part in the demonstration.
The protesters said they were demanding that the minimum monthly wage for garment workers be set at Tk 30,000.
An unnamed leader of a workers’ organisation said the demonstration was spontaneous and was not being organised under the banner of any particular organisation. Workers had taken to the streets collectively to press for their wage demand, the leader added.
A team from the district police reached the scene following reports of the blockade.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Tarek Al Mehedi said police had been deployed to the area and were attempting to bring the situation under control through discussions with the workers.
