A police vehicle was set on fire by unidentified individuals during a garment workers’ protest in Mirpur-11 in the capital on Sunday (November 1).
The incident took place around noon as police were attempting to disperse protesting garment workers. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was parked beneath the Mirpur-11 metro rail station when unidentified individuals set it ablaze amid police activity.
The incident heightened tensions in the area. Police had not issued any official statement immediately after the incident.
Garment workers have been staging demonstrations and blocking roads for several days, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. On Saturday, workers blocked roads in Mirpur-10 and continued their demonstrations on Sunday.
The protests brought traffic to a standstill along key roads between Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-12, severely disrupting movement between Gabtoli, Agargaon, Mohakhali, Kalshi, the airport and Pragati Sarani.
The disruption also affected traffic in Farmgate, Shahbagh, Science Lab and Karwan Bazar, causing significant hardship for office-goers and other commuters on the first working day of the week.
With road transport severely disrupted, many passengers travelling towards Agargaon and Farmgate turned to the metro rail as an alternative, resulting in increased crowding at metro stations.
