At Least 46 Killed in High-Speed Train Collision in Spain

- October 30, 2026, 02:34 AM ET

At least 46 people have been killed in a collision involving two high-speed trains in Spain’s central province of Toledo, according to Spanish media reports.

The accident occurred at around 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday, October 28, between the towns of Mora and Orgaz. Following the crash, rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia were suspended.

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator Adif confirmed the accident but did not immediately provide further details.

Spanish public broadcaster TVE reported that the two trains were travelling on the same track when one struck the other from behind at high speed, causing two carriages to derail.

Both trains were reportedly travelling from Madrid to Seville and were carrying a combined total of 544 passengers.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked by the incident. Local authorities warned that the number of fatalities could increase as emergency operations continued.

A 54-year-old passenger, identified as Jesus Jeronimo, described scenes of panic following the collision.
“At first, we thought the train had derailed,” he said. “We gradually made our way outside and saw that our train had tilted to one side. There were many injured people, and some were trembling with fear.”

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear, and further details are expected as authorities investigate the incident.
