Spectrum Rights Observatory (SRO) has called for an independent investigation into the reported mob lynching of Wahiduzzaman Shamim in Debhata, Satkhira, after allegations that he made derogatory remarks about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.
According to media reports, Shamim was attacked by a crowd on 13 October following the circulation of audio recordings on social media. He reportedly received medical treatment before being taken to a local health complex by police, where he was allegedly assaulted again. He later died after being transferred to Satkhira Medical Hospital.
Reports also indicate that an individual used Facebook Live to call people to gather amid the controversy. The circumstances surrounding the attacks, including the role of social media in mobilizing the crowd, have yet to be established through an independent investigation.
In a statement issued on 14 October, SRO expressed particular concern over reports that Shamim was attacked at a healthcare facility after the initial assault. The organization urged authorities to investigate how the attacks occurred, what measures were taken to protect his life, and whether any failures in the response contributed to his death.
“No allegation of religious offence can justify mob violence, extrajudicial punishment or the unlawful taking of a human life,” the organization said.
SRO emphasized that freedom of expression includes the right to question, criticize and challenge religious beliefs, doctrines and religious figures, including those regarded as sacred. It said that expression that offends religious sentiments does not, by itself, justify violence, intimidation or persecution.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential consequences of allegations circulating on social media before the facts have been verified. SRO said public anger and religious sensitivities must not override fundamental rights or the rule of law.
The organization called on the Bangladeshi authorities to conduct a prompt, independent and transparent investigation into Shamim’s death and the reported assaults. It urged investigators to preserve and examine medical and forensic records, available CCTV footage, witness accounts and relevant digital evidence.
SRO also called for an investigation into individuals suspected of carrying out, organizing or deliberately inciting the violence. It stressed that anyone found responsible should be held accountable through fair legal proceedings based on credible evidence.
The organization urged the authorities to take effective measures to prevent mob violence and protect people facing threats because of their opinions, beliefs or expression.
Freedom of expression, freedom of religion or belief, and the right to life are protected under international human rights law. SRO said allegations of religious offence must be addressed through lawful procedures rather than violence or punishment imposed by a crowd.
The organization urged the authorities to ensure justice for Shamim and reaffirm that no individual or group has the right to impose punishment through mob violence.
Spectrum Rights Observatory (SRO) is a human rights organization focusing on human rights, freedom of expression and accountability.
