DHAKA — Bangladesh recorded its highest number of daily dengue hospitalisations so far this year, with 1,872 patients admitted in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning, while five more people died from the mosquito-borne disease, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest figures were released in the DGHS’s regular dengue bulletin on Tuesday.
With the latest deaths, the country’s dengue death toll has reached 195 this year. September has emerged as the deadliest month so far, with 98 deaths recorded in the first 22 days of the month. August recorded 43 deaths, while 36 people died in July and 13 in June. One death was reported in May, while January and February recorded two deaths each.
The 1,872 new hospitalisations brought the total number of dengue patients admitted to hospitals nationwide this year to 65,499.
Meanwhile, 1,477 patients were discharged from hospitals over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 60,560, according to the DGHS.
Dhaka division reported the highest number of new admissions, with 781 patients, followed by Khulna with 316 and Chattogram with 285.
Barishal recorded 190 new admissions, while Rajshahi reported 162, Mymensingh 105, Rangpur 67 and Sylhet six.
The sharp rise in hospitalisations comes as Bangladesh enters a period of heightened dengue transmission, with health authorities continuing to monitor the spread of the disease and urging the public to take measures to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
