Police have arrested three women and two men for allegedly chanting slogans including “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu” outside Tongi East Police Station in Gazipur.
The arrests were made on Sunday afternoon as Abdul Matin, 47, president of the Krishak League’s 47th Ward unit in Tongi, was being taken to a prison van to be sent to court, said Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Maksudul Alam.
The five arrested individuals were identified as Mahdi Hasan, 26, son of Atikur Rahman of the Morokun area; Harunur Rashid, 34, son of the late Abdur Rouf of the same area; Johura Begum, 55, daughter of Mujibur Rahman; Sharmin Sultana, 37, daughter of Md Kawsar Ali; and Shahida Akter, 36, daughter of the late Shahid Mia.
According to police, Abdul Matin was arrested during a raid on Saturday night and subsequently held in the police station lock-up.
On Sunday afternoon, as police were taking him to court in a prison van, some of his relatives and supporters gathered outside the station and began chanting slogans including “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu” and “Joy Jananetri Sheikh Hasina.”
Police later arrested five people from the group.
Maksudul Alam said Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman of Tongi East Police Station filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incident.
Seven people have been named in the case, while another 10 to 12 people have been listed as unidentified accused, he said.
The officer said some of the people were chanting slogans in front of a shop outside the police station and attempted to enter the station while continuing to chant.
“Such slogans around the police station are not lawful,” he said, adding that legal action was being taken against those detained.
