Pezeshkian Says Current Situation Offers Opportunity to End Iran-U.S. War

Tehran, 22 August – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said the current situation presents an appropriate opportunity to bring the ongoing war with the United States to an end, while stressing that Iran would not surrender to threats.

Speaking at an event on Friday, Pezeshkian defended the agreement signed between Tehran and Washington on June 18, describing the outcome of negotiations as a “major achievement.” According to a statement from the Iranian president’s office, he said the agreement had been approved by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Pezeshkian rejected criticism that Tehran had made concessions, describing the new agreement as “honourable and valuable.” He said there was no provision in the deal that could be interpreted as surrender, adding that the commitments largely concerned the other side.

The Iranian president also warned that Tehran would respond if it faced another attack. “We will not bow to any threat under any circumstances,” he said, stressing Iran’s determination to defend itself.

Pezeshkian argued that wars must eventually end and that Iran should seize the present opportunity to do so. “Today, when we are in a position of strength and dignity, it is better to end the war,” he said.
He further accused the United States of violating international law by attacking Iranian schools, hospitals and infrastructure.

At the same time, Pezeshkian said Iran’s military commanders and armed forces remained fully prepared to defend the country. He also called for maintaining national unity amid the ongoing conflict.

The agreement, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, reportedly contains 14 points and was signed on June 18. It included provisions for a ceasefire and 60 days of negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement. Tehran later accused Washington of violating the deal, while Pakistan and Qatar continued their mediation efforts between the two sides.
