Dhaka, August 16 — Police in Chattogram have arrested 15 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, including five women, for allegedly gathering to hold a discussion marking August 15 in the Mansurabad area under Double Mooring Police Station.
The arrests were made during a raid conducted from around 3:30pm to 6:45pm on August 15 at an apartment building in the area.
Police Raid Meeting at Mansurabad Apartment
According to police, the 15 individuals had gathered on the fifth floor of the
apartment, owned by the late Fazlul Karim Chowdhury, to hold a discussion marking August 15.
Double Mooring police said they received information that Awami League leaders and activists, along with members of affiliated organisations, had assembled at the building for the programme.
A police team subsequently conducted a raid and arrested the individuals.
Five Women Among Those Arrested
Five of the 15 people arrested are women, police said.
The arrests came amid heightened security and restrictions on political activities linked to the Awami League during this year’s August 15 anniversary.
Police have intensified monitoring of gatherings and activities involving the party and its affiliated organisations, which are currently prohibited from political activities.
Case Filed at Double Mooring Police Station
Chattogram Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests in a press release issued on August 16.
According to Double Mooring police, a case was filed against the arrested individuals at the police station as Case No. 12.
Police said the suspects were initially interrogated before being sent to court.
August 15 Activities Under Tight Security
The arrests came as security agencies maintained heightened vigilance across Chattogram and other parts of the country during the 51st anniversary of the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
With the Awami League barred from political activities, authorities have been closely monitoring gatherings linked to the party and its affiliated organisations.
The Chattogram arrests are among a series of measures taken during the anniversary to prevent what authorities describe as unauthorised political gatherings and programs.
