August 13, 2026: Paris Saint-Germain began their new campaign with another European trophy, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday to retain the title and claim their second consecutive trophy in the competition.
PSG took the lead in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired a powerful shot past the Aston Villa defence.
Villa responded through 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo, who scored with a volley to level the match. The goal came just days after he was cleared to play following a dispute over his FIFA registration, marking a memorable competitive debut for the club.
PSG restored their lead in the 61st minute through Désiré Doué. The forward finished from a pass by Ousmane Dembélé, although the goal was initially ruled out for offside. Following a VAR review, the decision was overturned and the goal awarded.
The victory gives PSG the first of a possible six trophies they could win during the 2026-27 season.
PSG also became the first club since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017 to win the UEFA Super Cup in consecutive years.
The UEFA Super Cup traditionally brings together the winners of the previous season’s Champions League and Europa League. PSG qualified as Champions League winners, while Aston Villa entered the match as Europa League champions.
The result adds another piece of silverware to PSG’s growing European success after their Champions League triumph.
