Reykjavik, Iceland — August 12, 2026: The first stunning views of a total solar eclipse have been captured in Iceland, with the country’s national broadcaster RÚV airing footage of the rare celestial event.
The total eclipse began approaching the Icelandic coast, with the Látrabjarg area set to experience totality lasting about two minutes and 13 seconds. The event is expected to be the longest total solar eclipse visible from Iceland’s mainland.
The eclipse is also set to sweep across the United Kingdom, where the first stages are expected to become visible shortly after 7 p.m. local time, depending on location.
Millions of people have gathered in parts of Spain to witness the rare eclipse, while skywatchers across Europe are closely following the event.
However, viewing conditions in Cape Cornwall could be affected by wildfire smoke. Fires near the Land’s End area have raised concerns that thick smoke could obscure the eclipse.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said crews were working to control wildfires in the Croes-an-Wra and St Buryan areas as the eclipse approached.
