Aug. 4: Global oil prices fell to their lowest level in three weeks on Tuesday amid growing optimism that the United States and Iran could reach an agreement to restore shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The decline followed remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said negotiations with Iran and Oman had made significant progress. According to U.S. officials, commercial shipping through the Strait could resume as early as this week if talks conclude successfully.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, dropped nearly 5 percent to below $80 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell more than 5 percent to around $76 per barrel, marking the lowest prices for both benchmarks since July 13.
Rubio said discussions aimed at ensuring safe passage for more vessels through the Strait of Hormuz were advancing, while Bessent told CNBC that a deal could be reached within hours. President Donald Trump had also expressed optimism that the waterway could reopen soon, though he simultaneously warned Iran against further escalation.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes, has remained at the center of tensions following months of military confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
Although previous rounds of negotiations have failed to produce a lasting diplomatic settlement, renewed hopes for an agreement have eased fears of supply disruptions, prompting a sharp decline in global oil prices.
However, analysts caution that the market remains sensitive to developments in the region, as geopolitical uncertainty continues to pose risks to global energy supplies.
