Former Bangladesh prime minister is expected to outline her future political plans and discuss her proposed return to Bangladesh during an online interaction hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi.
Sheikh Hasina is set to make her first public media appearance since leaving office in August 2024, addressing journalists virtually from India at an event organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia (FCC South Asia) in New Delhi.
The virtual interaction is scheduled to take place on August 5, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Sir Mark Tully Auditorium on Mathura Road in New Delhi. The programme will also be livestreamed on FCC South Asia’s social media platforms.
According to the event organizers, Hasina is expected to discuss her future political plans and speak about her proposed return to Bangladesh. The appearance will mark her first formal engagement with the media since her government was ousted nearly two years ago.
The event coincides with the second anniversary of the political upheaval that led to the fall of Hasina’s government on August 5, 2024. Following a student-led uprising, she left Bangladesh for India after protesters stormed and vandalized several government buildings in Dhaka, ending her nearly 16-year tenure as prime minister.
Since arriving in India, Hasina has maintained a low public profile, refraining from formal press conferences and major public events. Her virtual address is expected to be her first significant public appearance since leaving Bangladesh.
The event is also expected to feature several Bangladeshi political leaders, diplomats and public figures. Among those invited are Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina’s son and former ICT adviser to the Bangladesh prime minister; Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Bangladesh’s former education minister; and Mahammad Ali Siddique, General Secretary of Bangladesh Human Rights Watch.
The organizers have said the programme will provide an opportunity for journalists and attendees to hear Hasina’s views on recent political developments and her outlook for Bangladesh’s future.
