Donald Trump’s Seven Promises: What to Expect from His Second Term as President

In a historic return to the White House, Donald Trump has been elected as the U.S. president for a second term, pledging decisive actions on major issues like immigration, the economy, and the ongoing Ukraine war. With Republicans now controlling the Senate, Trump is expected to find congressional support for his ambitious agenda. In his victory speech, he emphasized, “Our motto will be simple: Promise made, promise kept. We will fulfill our promises.” Here’s a breakdown of Trump’s seven key commitments and the challenges he may face.

1) Large-Scale Deportation of Undocumented Immigrants

Trump has pledged to conduct the largest deportation of undocumented immigrants in U.S. history, as well as complete the border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. However, analysts warn that such extensive deportation could face legal and operational challenges, along with potential economic consequences. Many economists argue that mass deportations could lead to labor shortages in certain industries, adversely impacting the broader U.S. economy.

2) Economic and Tax Reforms

To address inflation and reform the tax system, Trump plans to introduce measures aimed at reducing the tax burden on American workers. He has proposed tax exemptions on tips and the elimination of Social Security taxes, which would benefit low- to middle-income workers. In addition, Trump has proposed a 10% tariff on most foreign products and an extra 60% tariff on goods from China, a policy that some analysts say could increase consumer costs and provoke trade tensions.

3) Pardons for January 6th Defendants

Trump has promised to pardon individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot, referring to many of them as “political prisoners.” He has reassured his supporters that those involved will be granted clemency, stirring both support and controversy nationwide. However, legal experts suggest this could create significant political backlash, with implications for national unity.

4) Firing Special Counsel Jack Smith

Another significant pledge by Trump involves dismissing Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is currently investigating two criminal cases against him. Trump has described these investigations as “political conspiracies,” a stance that resonates with his supporters but is likely to draw criticism from his opponents and might raise questions about judicial independence.

5) Ending the Ukraine War

Criticizing U.S. financial involvement in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Trump has promised to end the war within 24 hours of taking office, though he has yet to provide specific details on how he would achieve this. Some analysts express skepticism about the feasibility of a rapid peace settlement, noting that negotiations could require substantial diplomacy and international collaboration.

6) No Federal Ban on Abortion

In contrast to some conservative voices, Trump has said he will not pursue a federal abortion ban, instead supporting policies that allow each state to set its own abortion laws. This stance reflects his intention to appeal to both conservative and moderate voters, though it has sparked debate among both supporters and critics regarding the protection of reproductive rights.

7) Easing Climate Regulations

In terms of energy and climate policy, Trump intends to reduce environmental restrictions and increase drilling for oil and gas. He believes these measures will help reduce energy costs for Americans, though environmental experts argue that it may impact U.S. climate goals and raise questions about the country’s long-term energy sustainability.

Trump’s promises have already sparked mixed reactions across the political landscape. While supporters view these commitments as steps toward a stronger and more independent America, critics caution that certain pledges lack clarity and could face significant legal and economic challenges. As Trump prepares to take office, the nation waits to see how these promises will unfold in practice and what they mean for the future of the United States.
