Shomi Kaiser, a popular actress from Bangladesh in the 1990s, was arrested on the night of November 5. She was detained from a residence on 6th Road in Sector 4 of Uttara, Dhaka. The Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of the Uttara Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Rownak Jahan, confirmed the arrest to Samay News.
Shomi Kaiser has been a controversial figure, especially since the student protests against discrimination. She has been known for her support of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government. Additionally, she has faced allegations of making derogatory remarks about BNP’s founder, Ziaur Rahman. As a result, she is currently facing a defamation lawsuit worth 100 crore taka.
The defamation case was filed on October 13 by Mohammad Rezwan Kabir at the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Magura.
Shomi Kaiser’s father, Shahidullah Kaiser, was a legendary language activist, politician, journalist, novelist, and literary figure in Bangladesh. He is also honored as a martyr intellectual from the 1971 Liberation War.
