The Berlin Film Festival has decided to leave Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, after Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera made a similar choice.
The Berlinale, one of the biggest film festivals in Europe, said it would stop using X after December 31, 2024. They will focus on other social media platforms. “Stay connected with all things Berlinale on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and our website,” the statement said.
The Berlinale didn’t explain exactly why it was leaving X, but Elon Musk’s political views are likely a reason. Musk, who owns X, has been a big supporter of Donald Trump. Since Musk bought the platform in 2022, X has become more open to voices from the far-right. This has caused problems with European cultural groups like the Berlinale, which are known for being progressive.
When asked why they were leaving X, the Berlinale told The Hollywood Reporter: “After watching and thinking about Platform X, we have decided to focus on other social media channels.”
Musk has also spoken about German politics. He often shares posts that support the far-right AfD party and its views against immigration.
Earlier this year, Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera also quit X. He said he “no longer wanted to stay on a platform whose goals and purpose” he didn’t agree with. He didn’t say which posts by Musk made him leave.
