Bangladesh will have to wait longer to get the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) for duty-free export to the US market.

The United States is not satisfied with Bangladesh’s progress on a number of issues, including labor rights. Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed told reporters after a meeting with US State Department officials and Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Washington on Thursday.
They want to see more progress in this area. However, it is not known when this benefit will be available. “We have said that we are gradually improving in this area. We need a little more time on labor and workforce issues. However, the United States will stand by the interim government and has assured Bangladesh of all kinds of assistance.

On the same day, the finance and trade adviser held a meeting with World Bank Vice President Martin Riser at the bank’s head office. The adviser said the World Bank is providing a grant of $250 million or about Tk 3,000 crore. The donation will come from the Emergency Recovery Fund.

Attending the annual meeting of the World Bank Group, the financial adviser and the governor of Bangladesh Bank are meeting in a row.
