This meeting followed PM Modi’s participation in the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, where he reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy as the sole means to resolve conflicts. His message underscored the importance of seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war through negotiations.

Misri noted that PM Modi shared his impressions from his interactions with leaders from both Russia and Ukraine, highlighting India’s ongoing peace efforts and dialogue initiatives.

Misri emphasized that India is “not neutral” in the conflict but firmly on the “side of peace,” expressing India’s readiness to assist in any peace initiatives. He reiterated PM Modi’s stance, which was also articulated at the BRICS Summit, emphasizing support for dialogue and diplomacy rather than war.

PM Modi’s engagement with both Russia and Ukraine was significant, as he made his first visit to Russia since the invasion in July and subsequently visited Ukraine in August at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In his meeting with Chancellor Scholz, PM Modi echoed sentiments expressed during his historic visit to Kyiv amidst the ongoing conflict.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also addressed the conflict in West Asia, noting that both leaders expressed concern over the ongoing developments in the region. He articulated hopes that the “already serious conflict”—which has resulted in significant damage, casualties, and destruction—does not escalate further or involve more parties. Misri highlighted the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as pathways for the concerned parties to reach agreements on the pressing issues at hand.
