Mass Dismissal of Minority Police Officers Sparks Controversy in Bangladesh under Interim Government

In a move that has shocked the nation, Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has suspended 252 sub-inspectors of police, with 120 of those being religious minorities. The mass dismissal has ignited widespread debate and raised concerns about religious discrimination, as many of the affected officers belong to the Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist communities.

The Hindu community, in particular, which is often seen as a key voting base for the previous Awami League government, appears to be a primary target in this wave of suspensions. Analysts and civil society members are questioning whether these actions are politically motivated or part of a broader attack on religious minorities in the post-Awami League era.
Religious minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus, have faced increasing levels of persecution and violence over the years, often finding themselves at the center of political and social unrest. This latest development is seen by many as an alarming escalation of that trend, raising concerns both domestically and internationally.

Civil society leaders have condemned the suspensions, calling it “unprecedented” to dismiss officers purely on the basis of religious identity. Some fear that the dismissals will further deepen religious divides in the country, while others are urging the government to provide transparency and justify its actions.
Among the dismissed officers are:
