Nepal Calls for De-escalation Amid India-Pakistan Conflict
Kathmandu, May 9: As tensions between India and Pakistan escalate, Nepal has urged both nations to step back and pursue peaceful resolution.
The Nepali Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern over the ongoing military conflict following the April 23 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including a Nepali national. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli extended his condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reaffirmed Nepal’s solidarity against terrorism.
Nepal maintains that it will not allow its territory to be used against neighboring countries and is committed to regional stability. To bolster security, Oli chaired a meeting of the National Security Council, while Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak led discussions to tighten surveillance along the Nepal-India border and airports.
Political reactions within Nepal have been mixed, with opposition leaders expressing concerns about India’s military response while others openly support India’s fight against terrorism. Calls have emerged for an independent investigation into the Pahalgam attack.
Additionally, lawmakers have urged the government to ensure the protection of Nepalis residing in India, particularly in conflict zones. The ongoing tensions continue to spark debate among Nepali leaders about regional security and Nepal’s diplomatic stance.
