Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected a three-day ceasefire proposal offered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky stated that no meaningful negotiations can take place without at least a 30-day ceasefire.
According to a report published by Anadolu Agency on Saturday (May 3), Zelensky dismissed Putin’s offer during a secret press briefing held in Kyiv on Friday, later made public. He described the proposal as a “theatrical performance.”
Putin’s ceasefire proposal was made in connection with the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II. In response, Zelensky emphasized, “We are considering the 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States. A mere three-day halt in fighting does not allow for real negotiations.”
He also urged foreign leaders not to visit Moscow, particularly for the Victory Day celebration on May 9. “We cannot take responsibility for what happens on Russian soil. If you go there, your safety is their responsibility, not ours,” Zelensky added.
Russian officials interpreted Zelensky’s remarks as a threat. Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, accused Zelensky of directly intimidating foreign leaders. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also urged Zelensky to stop making provocative statements.
