Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is nearly unrecognisable in the gripping first trailer for The Smashing Machine, his latest dramatic turn under acclaimed indie studio A24.
In this powerful biographical sports drama, Johnson steps into the bruised and battered shoes of real-life MMA legend Mark Kerr — a two-time UFC heavyweight champion and Pan American Games gold medalist. But this isn’t just another sports movie. Directed by Benny Safdie (of Uncut Gems fame), The Smashing Machine delves into Kerr’s battles inside and outside the ring, from addiction struggles to his turbulent relationship with ex-wife Dawn Staples, portrayed by Emily Blunt.
Fans were stunned by Johnson’s drastic physical transformation for the role, complete with a wig and extensive facial prosthetics. While his signature presence occasionally peeks through in the trailer, the look is a far cry from the charismatic action hero audiences are used to.
The film marks Safdie’s solo directorial debut and reunites Johnson and Blunt after their hit film Jungle Cruise. The pair’s on-screen chemistry continues beyond this project — they’re also collaborating on an upcoming mob drama described as Goodfellas meets The Departed, directed by none other than Martin Scorsese and co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Beyond his foray into prestige biopic territory, Johnson is also set to return as Maui in Disney’s live-action remake of Moana.
The Smashing Machine punches its way into UK and US cinemas on October 3, 2025.
