Fans of The Hunger Games franchise are buzzing with excitement following the recent casting announcement for Sunrise on the Reaping, the upcoming second prequel film from Lionsgate. The studio has confirmed that acclaimed actor Jesse Plemons (Killers of the Flower Moon) will take on the role of a young Plutarch Heavensbee — a decision that’s been met with overwhelming fan approval.
Originally portrayed by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in the Catching Fire and Mockingjay films, Plutarch Heavensbee is remembered as the cunning Head Gamemaker who secretly sided with the rebellion. Hoffman’s untimely death during production left some of his scenes in Mockingjay – Part 2 unfinished, but his portrayal remains iconic. Plemons’ casting is seen by many as a fitting continuation of the role.
“10/10 casting, he’s going to eat this role,” one fan enthused on social media, while another said, “Damn, that’s some spot on casting!!!” Others called the choice “flawless” and “exactly how I imagine him,” with many calling for the casting director to be rewarded — some even joking that they deserve an Oscar.
Sunrise on the Reaping will explore the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy as he fights in the 50th Hunger Games — also known as the Second Quarter Quell. As fans will recall, Haymitch, who later mentored Katniss and Peeta, was deeply traumatized by his victory, turning to alcohol to cope with the Capitol’s cruelty.
The film will also introduce audiences to Lenore, Haymitch’s love interest, with both roles already cast — though fans are still awaiting additional character reveals. With anticipation growing, Lionsgate has confirmed that the film will hit cinemas on November 20, 2026.
The novel Sunrise on the Reaping, on which the movie is based, is already available for purchase, giving fans an early look into the next chapter of the Hunger Games saga.
