Sydney Sweeney to Lead Split Fiction Movie Adaptation

Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney has secured her next major lead role, this time in the highly anticipated movie adaptation of Split Fiction, one of 2025’s most acclaimed video games.

Just two weeks after the game’s launch in March, buzz about a film adaptation began swirling, leading to a competitive bidding war among studios. While the project has yet to find a home, the creative team is already coming together with Sweeney officially signed on, along with a high-profile director and screenwriters.

Split Fiction tells the story of two budding writers — Mio, a science-fiction novelist, and Zoe, a fantasy author — who find themselves trapped within the fantastical worlds of their own creations. Forced to work together despite their differences, they embark on an extraordinary journey across varied and imaginative settings to find a way back to reality.

Though Sweeney’s specific role — whether Mio or Zoe — has not yet been confirmed, she will not only star in the film but also serve as an executive producer. The movie will be directed by Jon M. Chu, known for Wicked and Crazy Rich Asians, while the screenplay will be written by Deadpool & Wolverine scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Split Fiction has been a major hit for developer Hazelight Studios, earning a 91 Metacritic score and ranking as the third-best reviewed game of 2025 so far. The studio is also seeing another of its games, It Takes Two, adapted for the big screen, with Amazon Studios and Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions attached to that project.

Digital Spy praised Split Fiction in its review, noting: “The creativity on show and the mileage that the game gets from this concept and from playing with different perspectives is impressive. That extends to the boss fights, which have great variety and are some of the more challenging parts of the game.”

With top-tier talent both in front of and behind the camera, expectations are high that Split Fiction will deliver an equally imaginative and thrilling experience on the big screen.
