New Delhi, April 23, 2025 — In a bold move reflecting escalating tensions, the Government of India has announced five major decisions concerning its diplomatic and strategic stance on Pakistan. The announcement came after a high-level security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in response to the recent terror attack in Kashmir, which was claimed by the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Here are the five key decisions:
1. Suspension of Diplomatic Engagements:
India has decided to suspend all bilateral diplomatic talks with Pakistan until Islamabad takes “credible and verifiable action” against terror groups operating from its soil. This includes halting backchannel communications and people-to-people initiatives.
2. Review of the Indus Waters Treaty:
The government has initiated a review of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, signaling potential changes in the way water-sharing agreements are implemented. Officials said this could lead to increased utilization of India’s share of river waters, which may impact downstream flows to Pakistan.
3. Trade Freeze:
All remaining trade ties with Pakistan have been officially frozen. While formal trade had already been minimal, India has now moved to block informal trade channels and increase surveillance along smuggling routes in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.
4. Diplomatic Isolation Campaign:
India will intensify its efforts to diplomatically isolate Pakistan on the global stage. This includes lobbying with allies and international organizations to label Pakistan as a “state sponsor of terrorism” and push for sanctions or punitive actions.
5. Tighter Border Security Measures:
The Indian military and Border Security Force (BSF) have been directed to enhance surveillance and security along the Line of Control (LoC) and international border. Additional troops and high-tech monitoring systems are being deployed to prevent infiltration and cross-border attacks.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “India has shown remarkable restraint over the years, but the continued sheltering of terrorists by Pakistan cannot be ignored. These decisions reflect the will of a nation determined to protect its citizens.”
The Pakistani government has not yet responded officially to India’s new policy directions. However, analysts warn that the steps could worsen already strained relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
International reactions are being closely watched, as global powers urge both sides to exercise restraint and avoid escalation.
