Arakan Army’s Festival Inside Bandarban Sparks Sovereignty Concerns in Bangladesh

Dhaka, April 21, 2025 — A major controversy has erupted in Bangladesh after members of the Arakan Army (AA), a Myanmar-based ethnic armed group, reportedly entered Bangladeshi territory to organize and celebrate a traditional water festival in the remote hills of Bandarban district.

The event, held in the Remakri Mukh area of Thanchi upazila — deep inside the Chittagong Hill Tracts — was attended by uniformed and armed Arakan Army personnel. The two-day festival included cultural performances and drew participation from members of the local Mro community and public representatives.

Despite being held nearly 10 kilometers inside Bangladesh’s border, no immediate action was taken by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), triggering widespread criticism on social media and from political groups.

Jamaat-e-Islami, among others, condemned the incident, stating that allowing an armed foreign group to operate freely on Bangladeshi soil was a clear violation of national sovereignty. “This is unacceptable. The government must explain how this happened under the watch of our security forces,” said Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar.

The incident comes at a time when Bangladesh is engaged in delicate discussions with the Arakan Army regarding the possible repatriation of Rohingya refugees and border stability. While officials have hinted at semi-formal contacts with the group, this open display of presence inside Bangladesh has raised serious concerns in military and diplomatic circles.

Security analysts warn that this could set a dangerous precedent if not addressed immediately. “Even if there are ongoing backchannel talks, this kind of armed incursion — even for a peaceful event — challenges the authority of the state,” said one defense expert based in Dhaka.

As the footage from the event continues to circulate online, pressure is mounting on the Bangladesh government to clarify its stance and take diplomatic and security measures to prevent future violations.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.
