U.S. Vice President JD Vance Arrives in India for High-Stakes Trade Talks and Cultural Diplomacy

New Delhi, April 21, 2025 — U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived in India today for a four-day official visit aimed at bolstering economic and strategic ties between Washington and New Delhi. Accompanied by his wife, Usha Vance, and their three children, the Vice President was welcomed at Palam Airport with a ceremonial guard of honour and a traditional Indian dance performance .

The visit comes at a pivotal moment as both nations seek to finalize a bilateral trade agreement to avert potential U.S. tariffs on Indian exports. India has expressed willingness to reduce duties on over half of its imports from the U.S., which totaled $41.8 billion in 2024 . The two countries aim to increase bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 .

Vice President Vance’s itinerary includes high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on trade, defense cooperation, and regional security. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri are expected to participate in the talks .

Beyond official engagements, the Vance family is set to visit cultural landmarks such as the Akshardham Temple in Delhi, the Taj Mahal in Agra, and the City Palace in Jaipur. The visit holds personal significance for Second Lady Usha Vance, whose ancestral village, Vadluru in Andhra Pradesh, has expressed excitement over the family’s presence in India .

This trip marks Vice President Vance’s first official visit to India and is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the U.S.-India partnership amid shifting global dynamics and escalating U.S.-China tensions.
