The United States has reissued its travel advisory for Bangladesh, urging citizens to reconsider travel due to heightened risks of civil unrest, crime, and terrorism. The advisory, updated on April 18, 2025, categorizes Bangladesh under a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” alert, with a stricter “Level 4: Do Not Travel” warning for the Chittagong Hill Tracts region.
The advisory highlights persistent threats in the region, including communal violence, terrorism, kidnappings, and political unrest. The Chittagong Hill Tracts—comprising Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban districts—are flagged as particularly dangerous, with incidents involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and active shootings reported.
While political violence has subsided since the establishment of an interim government in mid-2024, the US State Department warns that protests and demonstrations can still escalate into violence without warning. The advisory also notes that the US government’s ability to provide emergency services may be limited, particularly outside Dhaka.
