Taiwanese Activist Condemned for Displaying Nazi Symbols During Public Appearance

Taipei, Taiwan – Taiwanese activist Sung Chien-liang has sparked widespread condemnation after wearing a Nazi armband and holding a Chinese translation of Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” during a public appearance at the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office. The incident has drawn criticism from Germany, Israel, and Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry, among others.
Sung, affiliated with the nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) party, appeared at the prosecutor’s office on Tuesday as part of an investigation into allegations of signature fraud related to his campaign to recall lawmaker Lee Kuan-cheng of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). During his appearance, Sung performed a Nazi salute, further intensifying backlash against his actions.
Following questioning, Sung was released on bail and ceased publicly displaying the Nazi paraphernalia. The incident has raised concerns about the use of such symbols in political discourse and prompted calls for accountability.
