US and Iran Hold Constructive Talks in Muscat, Eye Diplomatic Resolution

Washington DC [US], April 13: In a significant diplomatic development, US Special Envoy Steven Witkoff held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Muscat, Oman, aiming to resolve longstanding differences between the two nations. The discussions, hosted by Omani Foreign Minister Said Badr, were described as “positive and constructive” by the White House.
Witkoff, accompanied by US Ambassador to Oman Ana Escrogima, conveyed President Donald Trump’s commitment to settling disputes through “dialogue and diplomacy.” He emphasized the complexity of the issues but highlighted the importance of direct communication in achieving a mutually beneficial outcome. “These issues are very complicated, and Special Envoy Witkoff’s direct communication today was a step forward in achieving a mutually beneficial outcome,” the White House statement read.
The two sides agreed to reconvene next Saturday, signaling a willingness to continue the dialogue. The United States expressed gratitude to Oman for facilitating the talks and supporting the initiative.
Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, reported that the discussions included exchanges on the Iranian nuclear program and the removal of sanctions. The talks, the first in years, followed a letter from President Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, requesting the opening of negotiations. IRNA noted that Iran is giving diplomacy a “genuine chance,” contingent on the US demonstrating resolve and goodwill.
The preliminary talks are seen as an opportunity to gauge the seriousness of both sides in pursuing a diplomatic resolution. As tensions remain high, the outcome of these discussions could have significant implications for regional and global stability.
