Egg Prices in the United States Hit All-Time High

Egg prices in the United States are skyrocketing, reaching an all-time high. A dozen eggs now sells for $6.23, which is approximately 760 Bangladeshi Taka.

This information has emerged from a recent report published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to the data, the average price of a dozen eggs in March was $6.23—more than double the price from a year ago. In February, the price was $5.90 per dozen, and in January, it was $4.95. The current price has surpassed all previous records.

Although wholesale prices slightly decreased towards the end of March, it has had little effect on the retail market.

Last month, President Donald Trump claimed that egg prices in the U.S. had dropped by 35 percent. He praised Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins for doing a “great job” in bringing down prices.

However, experts believe that one of the main reasons behind the rising egg prices in the U.S. is the outbreak of bird flu. Since 2022, the country has been struggling to manage this crisis. This year, the infection has resulted in one human death. Farmers have culled more than 30 million egg-laying hens. According to government policy, if even a single bird on a farm is infected, all the birds on that farm must be culled. In light of the current situation, this rule has been somewhat relaxed.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that no new bird flu outbreaks have been detected in the past two weeks. However, it will still take time for the egg production system to return to normal.

Bird flu has affected not only birds but also dairy livestock, further complicating containment efforts and disrupting market dynamics.
