Japanese Start-Up to Launch Revolutionary All-Terrain Electric Wheelchair in 2026

Tokyo-based start-up Lifehub Inc has announced plans to launch an all-terrain electric wheelchair in 2026, designed to empower users with unmatched mobility. This innovative wheelchair will enable users to climb and descend stairs, board trains and buses without assistance, and navigate challenging surfaces. Additionally, Lifehub is working on a groundbreaking model that will allow users to ride escalators independently—a world first.
The wheelchair, named Avest, typically runs on four wheels but is equipped with caterpillar tracks for tackling stairs, slopes, and uneven terrain. With a seat that adjusts its angle to accommodate inclines of up to 40 degrees, Avest promises a smooth and safe experience for users. The wheelchair can travel up to 40 kilometers on a single charge, making it highly efficient and reliable for extended use.
Lifehub emphasized that while stair-climbing wheelchairs already exist, many require users to ascend facing backward. Avest aims to change that by enhancing both functionality and user experience. The launch edition, limited to 50 units, will be priced at 1.5 million yen (approximately S$13,800). In Japan, electric wheelchairs are exempt from sales tax, offering additional accessibility for users.
Looking ahead, Lifehub’s CEO Hiroshi Nakano stated, “We want to solve the challenges faced by wheelchair users with our technologies.” The company’s innovative escalator-compatible wheelchair under development is set to further redefine mobility for users worldwide.
With this cutting-edge technology, Lifehub is pushing the boundaries of accessibility and independence, paving the way for transformative solutions in personal mobility.
