U.S. Wants Greenland to Separate from Denmark

The United States had previously expressed concerns about Greenland’s status. Former President Donald Trump once directly threatened to “take over Greenland.” However, the U.S. has now stepped back from that stance. Vice President J.D. Vance has instead stated that he wants to see Greenland separate from Denmark.

Vance claims that Denmark has left Greenland vulnerable to Chinese and Russian influence. While Trump had previously suggested using force to take control of the Arctic island, Vance clarified that the U.S. has no immediate plans to do so.

Instead, he has urged Greenland’s residents to reconsider their relationship with Denmark, arguing that Denmark has not provided adequate support to the island. According to Vance, this lack of commitment is equivalent to breaking promises.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, however, has strongly opposed Vance’s remarks, calling his visit disrespectful. Previously, Trump had justified his interest in Greenland by claiming that U.S. control over the island was necessary for “global peace.”
