Bill Gates Predicts a Two-Day Workweek Within a Decade

Microsoft co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates believes that within the next decade, artificial intelligence (AI) will reduce the standard workweek to just two days.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s TV talk show, Gates discussed the future of work and questioned the necessity of a five- or six-day workweek. He stated, “If you think deeply, you’ll realize that life is more than just work. There are many things to do beyond jobs.”

He emphasized that AI will significantly transform workplaces, handling most office tasks and allowing employees to work fewer days.

AI’s Role in Reducing Work Hours

This is not the first time Gates has predicted a shorter workweek. In 2023, when ChatGPT was introduced, he mentioned that AI could eventually reduce the workweek to three days, providing people with more free time.

Many employees worldwide face stress due to professional, personal, and social responsibilities. A reduced workweek could enhance productivity and well-being. A recent study by a Western company found that increasing the weekly day off led to a 24% rise in employee efficiency.

Though the concept of shorter workweeks is not yet widespread, it is gaining popularity. Tokyo’s city administration has already introduced a four-day workweek for government employees. Similarly, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan, recently suggested that AI’s growing role in business and production might soon reduce the average workweek to three and a half days.

Limits of AI in the Workplace

Despite his optimism about AI, Gates warned against complete reliance on it. He stressed that certain societal aspects should remain under human control. “While AI can handle labor-intensive tasks, services, and product distribution, some responsibilities must always be reserved for humans,” he noted.
