Royal Society Faces Criticism Over Decision to Retain Elon Musk’s Fellowship

The Royal Society, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scientific academies, has come under fire for its decision not to take disciplinary action against Elon Musk, despite mounting concerns from the scientific community. Musk, who was elected as a fellow in 2018 for his technological achievements, has faced allegations of breaching the Society’s code of conduct.
Controversy Surrounding Musk’s Fellowship
The Guardian reported that Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society, ruled out disciplinary proceedings against Musk in a confidential letter to members. The decision has sparked outrage among scientists, with nearly 3,500 signing an open letter expressing dismay at the Society’s “continued silence and apparent inaction.” Critics argue that Musk’s behavior, including his alleged embrace of conspiracy theories and his role in the Trump administration’s “assault on scientific research,” violates the Society’s principles.
Divided Opinions Within the Society
While some fellows have called for Musk’s removal, citing his inflammatory remarks and actions that undermine scientific institutions, others fear that such a move could politicize the Society and harm its reputation. The governing council stated that making judgments on the political views and actions of fellows could “do more harm than good to the Society and the cause of science in general.”
Musk’s Silence
Musk has not publicly commented on the controversy, including the open letter from scientists. His usual platform for public remarks, X, remains silent on the matter.
The decision has ignited a broader debate about the role of scientific institutions in addressing the conduct of their members, particularly when it intersects with political and ethical concerns. The Royal Society’s stance has left many questioning its commitment to upholding its code of conduct and protecting the integrity of science.
