Pope Francis Finally Out of Danger

After five weeks of hospitalization, Pope Francis returned to the Vatican on Sunday, March 23. The 88-year-old pontiff had been suffering from double pneumonia, marking the most serious health crisis in his decade-long papacy, according to Reuters.

Pope Francis was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital shortly after noon. Before leaving, he made a public appearance, his first since February 14. In a brief statement from the Vatican, he expressed gratitude to the doctors and medical staff for their relentless efforts and care.

As he left the hospital under police escort, his vehicle stopped at the Basilica of Saint Mary, where he placed flowers as a sign of reverence. This church holds personal significance for the Pope, as he frequently visits for prayer.

During his hospital stay, the Pope received oxygen support to aid his breathing. However, he was seen breathing normally in public, although an oxygen tube was visible in his nose while in the car.

Catholics worldwide had been praying for his recovery, and news of his discharge brought relief to pilgrims visiting the Vatican.

Despite being released from the hospital, doctors have advised the elderly Pope to take at least two months of caution before resuming full activities. As a result, the Vatican may revise his upcoming schedule.

King Charles had planned to meet the Pope on April 8, and he was also expected to participate in Easter celebrations on April 20. However, adjustments to these engagements may now be necessary.
