The United States Seeks Control of Ukraine’s Nuclear Power Plants

A proposal from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine’s nuclear power plants has emerged amid discussions on ceasefire and security. Military leaders from 30 countries gathered in the UK to deliberate on deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine to ensure a ceasefire with Russia.

Trump reportedly proposed taking control of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants as part of efforts to stabilize the situation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed discussions on this matter, particularly concerning the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is currently under Russian control. He stated that no pressure was exerted on Ukraine to make concessions.

Despite these talks, a comprehensive ceasefire remains elusive. Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized stopping Western military support to Ukraine as a key condition for peace. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have expressed willingness to deploy troops to Ukraine, with other countries also showing interest. However, the exact number of nations supporting this initiative remains unclear.

Following a phone conversation between Trump and Zelensky, the White House described the discussion as “excellent.” U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a joint statement, saying that Washington could play a crucial role in securing Ukraine’s power infrastructure. The U.S. is also committed to ensuring Kyiv receives additional air defense systems from European allies.

In light of these developments, further discussions between U.S. and Ukrainian officials are expected to take place in Saudi Arabia in the coming days. Russia and Ukraine have also exchanged 372 prisoners as a goodwill gesture following Trump and Putin’s recent phone conversation. However, both sides continue to accuse each other of ongoing military strikes.

The international community closely watches these diplomatic efforts as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine remains unresolved.
