‘Ne Zha 2’ Overtakes Star Wars to Become 5th Highest-Grossing Movie

In a stunning achievement, Ne Zha 2, the animated Chinese blockbuster, has overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the 5th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide. As of Sunday, the film has grossed over RMB 14.86 billion ($2.054 billion) in China alone, according to Maoyan. When adding an additional $31 million from international markets, the global total climbs to more than $2.085 billion, surpassing The Force Awakens’ total of $2.071 billion.

The continued success of Ne Zha 2 marks an impressive milestone for the film, which has now become a global phenomenon. Projections suggest that the movie could ultimately reach RMB 15.2 billion ($2.1 billion) in China alone. Internationally, the film continues to expand, with upcoming releases in markets such as Indonesia, Europe, and Japan.

The movie has also made waves in the Imax format, where it has grossed a total of $155 million globally, making it the 6th highest-grossing Imax release ever. Of this total, $151.6 million comes from China. In the UK, Imax screens accounted for 35% of the film’s preview launch, making Ne Zha 2 the biggest local-language opening for the format in the market.

The film’s stellar performance not only demonstrates its massive success in China but also its growing global appeal. Ne Zha 2 is continuing to break records, and its impact is being felt far beyond its home country.

In other box office news, Warner Bros.’ Mickey 17 has grossed $90.5 million worldwide after its second weekend, with an international box office total of $57.2 million. Additionally, Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World added $6 million to its overseas cume, bringing its global total to $388.6 million.

Despite a relatively quiet weekend for major studio releases, Ne Zha 2 has stolen the spotlight, proving that the global box office is evolving with an increasingly diverse array of international hits.

More milestones to come for Ne Zha 2 as it continues its unprecedented run.
