“India Imposes 150% Tariff,” White House Criticizes India Again

The U.S. President, Donald Trump, has repeatedly criticized India’s high tariffs. Recently, he stated that India has promised to lower tariffs on American products, although the Modi government claims discussions are still ongoing.

Amid this debate, Washington once again targeted New Delhi over tariffs. During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt highlighted India’s high import duties. She pointed out that India imposes a 150% tariff on American alcohol, calling it unhelpful for trade.

According to a report by NDTV, citing Indian news agency ANI, Levitt made these remarks while discussing tariffs imposed by various countries on U.S. goods. She emphasized that Trump’s administration believes in mutual cooperation and fair trade.

“Look at India—they impose a 150% tariff on American alcohol. Do you think this helps export Kentucky bourbon to India? I don’t think so. Additionally, India imposes a 100% tariff on our agricultural products,” Levitt stated during a press conference on Tuesday.

Trump has frequently criticized India over its tariff policies. In a previous speech, he claimed that “India imposes tariffs exceeding 100% on U.S. products.”

Recently, India reduced tariffs on American bourbon whiskey under U.S. pressure. Previously, the tariff was 150%, but it has now been reduced to 100%, potentially lowering the prices of popular U.S. brands like Jim Beam in India.

Additionally, in its latest budget, India also lowered tariffs on motorcycles, benefiting American brand Harley-Davidson.
